Email security: Microsoft blocks billions of emails

17 Feb 2022

Phishing emails – where criminals attempt to trick users into disclosing information or installing malware – is on the rise. Microsoft’s recent announcement that they blocked 1000 malicious emails per second during 2021 (almost 40 billion emails)  highlights the vast scale of this problem.

While Microsoft’s success in blocking these emails is great news, businesses need to review their practises to make sure their email security is as tight as possible.

Criminals are still using these relatively simple methods of attack, as they are effective. Bad habits make this possible and with many people still using the same passwords over multiple accounts, we can see why this works!

Are you guilty of this in your business?

If you need to tighten up email security, there are a few low cost and simple steps you can take.

  • We advise you start by introducing multi-factor authentication across the company. This will add a layer of security to your network.
  • Microsoft’s Defender provides low cost protection against advanced business email threats.
  • Phishing campaigns –  try sending phishing emails to your team to see if they fall for the bait and couple this with training courses for those who do.
  • Getting Cyber Essentials certification in place would help you make sure you have all the key controls covered and means you can demonstrate this to potential partners.

We help our IT Support customers across Glasgow, Edinburgh and throughout the UK to get their security right.
